Meanwhile, Doctor Sahin receives a coded message summoning him to a secret meeting that aims to forge an alliance that could change the balance of power in Known Space. But first, he must circumvent the fighter ships and heavily armed troops of the traitorous emir bent on killing him before he reaches the negotiating table.

Both men must call upon their developing skills and growing friendship to bear the burden of carrying between the Krag Hegemony and the Earth Union a fateful ultimatum and the shocking answer—an answer that could spell eternal slavery, or even extinction, for all humankind.

Having greatly enjoyed the first book in this series I was very excited when I learned the next book in the series was available.

Even better than the first book this one jumps right into the action and continues the action right up to the very end. I was very pleased with the pacing of this novel. It managed to continue to examine how ships of the future will operate but also added even more wonderfully narrated battles. The excitement continued right up to the very last word that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen. I am ready for the next one.

I was especially pleased with the return of Mr. Wortham-Biggs. I also enjoyed a discussion of the motivation of the Krag that took place about half way through, it really went a long way in exploring the depth of the universe. One thing that I noted in passing was the authors take on religion in space, many sci-fi series seem to think that once out in space
everyone will be non-religious or part of some universal belief system, it's a refreshing take that the different faiths will still be
out there and really goes a long way to adding even more depth to the motivation of characters.

We get a glimpse of the political situation in the Union near the end and I really hope that is explored more in the next book to really get a complete look at all the different motivations of the characters.

Would highly recommend this to fans of military sci-fi or really any sci-fi fans at all.

For Honor We Stand Man of War Book 2 eBook H Paul Honsinger Reviews

All I can say about this sequel is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I thoroughly enjoy Honsinger's writting style his attention to detail makes me feel like I'm reading a docu-drama about the life and times of the naval men of the future - so realistic seeming does the author make his universe; his characters, for example Max, Dr. Sahin and Admiral Hornmeyer, are vibrant, strong characters that are very memorable - including the aliens; the story itself is well-developed and plotted with surprises, twists and turns that, as a reader, will keep you on your toes right up till the end - I kid you not here, my heart was in my mouth wondering what humanity was going to decide (and no I can't tell you as of course that would completely ruin the surprise). This was a way cool book from the start where we see Max and the crew of the Cumberland trying to out-smart a couple of Krag ships while not been blown to a million atoms - difficult to do when your compression drive is out because of damage. There are new and unexpected allies and the ever so mysterious Vaaach make a few surprising appearances. So, if you enjoyed the first book, then you are absolutely going to enjoy this one; if you are a new to Honsinger's Man of War series, begin with the first one and start enjoying the adventures of Max Robichaux and the crew of Cumberland.
Messrs. Honsinger and Phillips gave us an interesting albeit conflict-ridden universe in the first volume of their trilogy-to-be, To Honor You Call Us Man Of War (Volume 1), and in the second they take it further and improve on it. LCDR Max Robichaux is still the most widely read and risk-taking young officer in the Space Navy, driven by duty and honor to achieve great things against all odds. His "kitchen cabinet" of officers supports him in a grand manner, and he serves a senior command that is all that one could ask. His inherited crew is shaping up nicely, and all in all volume two is a nice step up in all ways. Max has flaws that are clear to Dr. Sahin, but they are more humanizing than crippling. There is one scene that starts as a rather puzzlingly mundane description of midshipman activities that turns into something much more interesting and revealing. A nice piece of writing.

The good news is that the Pfelung are no longer the only well drawn alien race; the enemy Krag get their share of attention in this book, as does another, more mysterious race. The authors paint these various races as species similar to animals we know on Earth, but far more advanced. The key is that their behavior stems from evolutionary circumstances that are quite different from human/primate circumstances. This is a bit obvious but it works well.

The action and the space tactics are also quite well done.

The bad news is that the authors are still writing for that audience that loves their explanations of everything. I have no doubt that there is such an audience; sadly, I am not in it and tend to skip past most of these sections. I don't really care how the engines work on a spaceship any more than I care how the engine works in my car, or how the pictures appear on my TV, or --- well, you get the picture. In the same vein, there are far too many occasions when a fact is drawn out seemingly just to demonstrate that Max and the authors know it. All this results in dialogue that is too often explanatory rather than realistic. Fix that and you've got a five star series.
