Bus Stop at the Last Chance Loni Wagner Western Mystery Book 2 edition by Sue Hardesty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Feisty Loni's back. In this second western mystery she's a detective in the southern Arizona community of Caliente. She keeps her colleagues at bay with a sharp wit, scalding comebacks, and her family and community stories that are hilarious or purposeful or both. A new romance may be blossoming after the grief of seeing Maria, her great love and police partner , killed in Los Angeles police duty.
Warning to readers this is not a story with a single crime or mystery to solve. Duties range from apprehending drug runners to sorting out domestic entanglements. It is life as Loni lives it in Caliente--sometimes thorny, sometimes satisfying.
A contrasting side to Loni is the deep love and respect for her family of mixed heritage. We get to know her German, Apache and O'odham people and the extent to which she goes to care for them.
The author has a fine gift for describing the Sonoran desert and with her words the heat of the place is palpable.
But it's knowing Loni that keeps me turning the pages. She's a character I don't forget.
Sue Hardesty is a storyteller who has a voice true to the characters and settings of her tales.
Very loosely structured as a police procedural, Bus Stop reminds the reader of Bill Crider’s Sheriff Dan Rhodes series. Like the Crider books, there is a central simple yet baffling community problem that allows the main character, Lonnie Wagner, to juggle life and work in a way that reveals a part of history that might otherwise be lost.
This style allows the author to capture the culture and daily lives of her characters. Rich in detail, Bus Stop informs the reader as Hardesty unravels her story. She illuminates the social issues of rural Southern Arizona, from the tragedies resulting of illegal immigration to the gradual disappearance of American Native traditions.
Despite uneven editing, Hardesty drew this reader in by the fullness of her observation and her obvious wealth of knowledge. The many relationships and often hard luck desert stories within Bus Stop demonstrate great love and empathy for the place and its people.
The story is authentic, almost as if the author had been part of the story. I can't wait for book number three
